Firenze versus Venezia

Updated: Jul 20, 2022

From the middle of the fifteenth century in Italy, in addition to Tuscany, distinct paths to humanism emerged in various other regions.

One of the most coherent and successful paths was the Venetian path, with Venice as the driving force. In Venice, as in Florence, the most important cultural objective of art was the determination of the universal essence of nature.

Unlike the Tuscans who identified it in the intelligible form of the former and in the substance of the latter, the Venetians identified the essence in color; color is another aspect through which the phenomenon of light is expressed. While in Tuscany the light is translated by a chromatic chiaroscuro, in the specific case of Veneto, it is presented in the form of a complex of chromatic zones.

The Venetian color, just like the theoretical chiaroscuro of the Tuscans, reveals metaphysical realities. But for the Tuscans, the light penetrates close to the matter to reveal the intelligible form of the things, for the Venetians the light saturates the matter to reveal the form that is given to the intuition in the substance. Immerse yourself in the italian Renaissance with our tour in Tuscany.
