Whether you believe this legend or not, one thing is certain: Giotto learned so much from his master that he surpassed him.
If we had to name just one of Giotto's works, for us it would certainly be the fresco decoration of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, named after the surname of the patron, Enrico Scrovegni.
Built as a private oratory and mausoleum, the Scrovegni Chapel is one of the most famous places in Padua thanks to the cycle of frescoes painted by the Tuscan master at the height of his maturity, at the beginning of the fourteenth century. It is an absolutely innovative work: its use of color, its ability to capture the forms and the deepest human feelings, make it in some ways a true anticipation of the Renaissance and an absolute masterpiece. The Virgin and Christ live again in front of us in the passion of their events, and everything around us explodes, like the first kiss in the history of art and like a grandiose Last Judgment, of the richness of its chromatisms.
